Glossary

    • affiliate -a business you've "partnered" with.  They pay for any business you send them, either commissions on sales from customers you've refered or a small amount for every visitor you refer (paid per "click" or "click-through").  You place graphic or text links on your site which will direct visitors to your affiliates.
    • "stickiness" -how well does a site keep it's visitors around and coming back.  The better the overall site experience the stickier it will be. Some factors contributing to stickiness are; visual appeal, interesting content, fresh content, and ease of use.
    • search engine -a program on the internet which attempts to find things for you based on keywords that you provide. Commonly indexes websites based on keywords in the content and/or placed within the site structure.
    • domain name -an internet address such as "www.highcountrydesign.com." Having your own domain adds credibility to your site, similar to having your own business building as opposed to having a suite # in someone else's building.
    • host -the internet exists in thousands of serversThe servers provide space to store webpage programming and then "serve" it up as other computers request information. A host maintains a server and rents server space to anyone who wants an internet presence.  A host sells or rents internet real estate.
    • server -a computer which stores websites and serves up their programming to computers that request a particular site. Servers are the virtual real estate of the internet.
    • secure server -a server which encrypts it's data so that the information is encoded and not accessable to unauthorized computers or persons. Necessary for credit card transactions and other confidential information.
    • ISP -Intenet Service Provider, provide access to the World Wide Web. These are the "on-ramps" to the information highway. Usually provide e-mail addresses for their clients.
    • merchant account -account with your local or remote bank allowing you to process credit card transactions.
    • shopping cart -allows customers to add products to their bill as they go from page to page and submits the info to you for processing.  Ideal for the site offering many products.
    • order form -customers enter their purchases and the form submits the information to you for processing. Ideal for the site offering a small number of products.
    • panorama -A wide angle view, up to 360*. Viewed as a window on a web page, the visitor can fully rotate the image.  Multiple panoramas can be linked to form a "virtual world." See my examples.
